Description
α-Conotoxin MII is a peptide toxin comprising 16 amino acids and featuring two disulfide bridges, isolated from the marine snail Conus magus. The unique spacing of its cysteine residues classifies it into the 4/7 subclass of α-conotoxins. This toxin exhibits remarkable selectivity and potency as an inhibitor of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), specifically targeting the α3β2 subtype. Its affinity for this subtype is 2-4 orders of magnitude greater than for muscle nAChRs, as well as for other subtypes such as α2β2, α2β4, α3β4, α4β2, α4β4, and α7. Research has further demonstrated that α-conotoxin MII also acts as a selective antagonist for the α6β2 nAChR subtype and effectively blocks β3-containing neuronal nAChRs. α-Conotoxin MII has become a valuable tool in neurobiological research, aiding in the study of nAChR functions and their roles in synaptic transmission and neurological disorders.
