Description
α-Conotoxin PeIA is an analgesic α-conotoxin isolated from the venom of Conus pergrandis. This peptide has a structure characterized by a series of cysteine residues that form disulfide bonds. This structure is critical for its stability and function, allowing it to interact specifically with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (AChRs), which are crucial for neuronal signaling in both the peripheral and central nervous systems. α-Conotoxin PeIA discriminates between α9α10 and α7 nicotinic AChRs. Additionally, α-conotoxin PeIA effectively blocks α3β2 nicotinic AChRs. It also has a potent inhibitory effect on voltage-gated N-type calcium channels in rat dorsal root ganglion neurons. Notably, the inhibitory effect of α-conotoxin PeIA is fully reversible when the peptide is washed out of the extracellular medium.
