Description
αA-Conotoxin OIVA is a peptide toxin that was first isolated from the marine snail Conus obscures. αA-Conotoxin OIVA belongs to the αA-conotoxin superfamily and is known for its ability to selectively block nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). It is potent and selective for fetal neuromuscular nAChRs (αβγδ). Interestingly, it has a much lower affinity for adult neuromuscular nAChRs (αβϵδ) and has little inhibitory effect on neuronal nAChRs in mature peptides. The toxin is highly potent, completely inhibiting the elicited currents in these receptors and exhibiting a very slow dissociation rate from the fetal muscle receptor, with the ability to paralyze muscles. This high affinity and specificity for nAChRs makes αA-conotoxin OIVA a valuable tool in neuropharmacology research and a potential candidate for therapeutic applications. Studies of the αA-conotoxin OIVA may lead to a better understanding of the complexity of synaptic transmission and the development of new therapeutics for a variety of neurological disorders.
