Description
αC-Conotoxin PrXA, commonly referred to as αC-PrXA, is a conotoxin originally extracted from the venom of the fish-hunting snail Conus parius. This peptide has emerged as a paralytic peptide neurotoxin and a highly selective inhibitor of neuromuscular nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). Remarkably, αC-PrXA reversibly blocks both adult and fetal mammalian muscle nAChRs, specifically those composed of the α1/β1/ε/δ and α1/β1/γ/δ subunits. The mechanism by which αC-PrXA acts involves competition with α-bungarotoxin for binding at the interfaces between the α/δ and α/γ subunits of the nAChR, exhibiting a particular affinity for the α/δ subunit interface. This distinction sets αC-PrXA apart from many other known conopeptides that function as nicotinic antagonists. In fact, its biochemical characteristics bear a striking resemblance to those of the snake toxins known as Waglerins.
