Chitosan Oligosaccharide

Characteristic

Chitosan Oligosaccharide

Chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) is the major degradation product of chitosan/chitin via chemical hydrolysis or enzymatic degradation involving deacetylation and depolymerization processes. Compared to chitosan and chitin, COS is characterized by low molecular weight, high degree of deacetylation and high degree of polymerization. Furthermore, COS has better solubility and lower viscosity under physiological conditions because of its shorter chain length and the free amino group in the D-glucosamine unit. Studies have shown that these properties of COS have important applications in the biomedical, pharmaceutical, and agricultural fields.

Applications

  • Food industry
    • COS can be used as a natural preservative for food products to replace sodium benzoate and other chemical preservatives.
    • COS can be used as an active agent for intestinal probiotics such as bifidobacteria in dairy products to enhance the absorption of calcium and minerals.

Food industry

  • Feed industry

Feed industry

  • COS can be used in the feed of poultry such as pigs, cattle and sheep or aquatic animals such as fish, shrimps and crabs to promote their growth and improve their immunity.
  • COS selectively activates and promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in the animal intestine, thus helping to regulate microbial metabolic activity in the animal intestine.
  • COS has strong adsorption properties. It adsorbs harmful heavy metals from the animal's body, thus reducing damage to organs such as the liver from harmful metals.
  • Agricultural industry
    • COS helps to accelerate the growth and development of plant roots, stems, leaves and fruits, and increase crop yield.
    • COS protects against diseases caused by fungi, bacteria and viruses such as mosaic disease, leaf blight, yellow dwarf disease and fusarium wilt.
    • COS helps to promote germination of crop seeds. Cucumber seeds treated with COS showed a significant increase in germination rate and germination index.
    • In cold, drought and high salt environments, COS stabilizes the cell membrane structure of crops, increases their ability to absorb and retain water, promotes photosynthesis and improves their resistance to stress.

Agricultural industry

  • Pharmaceutical industry

Pharmaceutical industry

  • COS has important biological properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, and drug/DNA delivery capabilities. These properties allow it to be used not only as an aid in the treatment of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer and obesity, but also to improve the body's immune system.
