Lithium alginate is a natural plant polysaccharide derived from the marine plant brown algae. It is almost odorless, tasteless and dissolves slowly in water into a viscous colloidal solution. Lithium alginate is insoluble in alcohol and in hydro alcoholic solutions in which the alcohol content is greater than 30% by weight. Moreover, it is also insoluble in chloroform, ether, and acid with a pH value lower than 3.

Lithium alginate can be used as a plasticizer and adhesive for welding electrode coatings. Moreover, its presence can also help reduce the splash generated during welding.
Lithium alginate is a promising new binder material for lithium-ion battery electrodes that not only promotes energy storage but also eliminates the use of toxic compounds now used in the manufacture of components.
