Microalgae are microscopic algae that are invisible to the naked eye. They are phytoplankton and are usually found in freshwater and marine systems. Naturally growing microalgae not only constitute the largest and likely most diverse photosynthetic biota in freshwater and marine systems, they also form a critically important link in the global food chain and global oxygen production.
