Description

Okadaic acid sodium is a potent marine toxin derived from Prorocentrum concavum that serves as a specific inhibitor of protein phosphatases (PP). These enzymes play a crucial role in regulating various cellular processes, including signal transduction, cell growth, and apoptosis. This compound exhibits a significantly higher affinity for PP2A, while also inhibiting other phosphatases such as PP1, PP3, PP4, and PP5. Notably, it does not inhibit PP2C. By binding to the active site of these enzymes, okadaic acid sodium prevents the dephosphorylation of various protein substrates, leading to the accumulation of phosphorylated proteins within the cell. It also functions as a tumor promoter. In addition, there is evidence that sodium okadaic acid may have neurotoxic effects, leading to conditions such as diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP). Furthermore, the transport and distribution of okadaic acid sodium within cells and tissues are enhanced by its hydrophobic backbone, facilitating its entry into cells. The sodium salt form of okadaic acid demonstrates improved stability compared to its free acid counterpart when stored in organic solvents, making it a more reliable option for laboratory use and research applications.
