Description

Sea cucumber polysaccharide is an important component of the sea cucumber body wall, and its content can account for more than 6% of the total organic matter of dry sea cucumbers, and can reach up to 31%. There are two main types of sea cucumber polysaccharides: one is sea cucumber glycosaminoglycans or mucopolysaccharides, which are branched heteropolysaccharides composed of D-N-acetylglucosamine, D-glucuronic acid and L-fucose, with a relative molecular mass of 40000-50000. The other is sea cucumber fucoidan, a straight-chain homopolysaccharide composed of L-fucose, with a relative molecular mass of 80000-100000. Sea cucumber polysaccharides have been shown to have a variety of biological activities, making them have a wide range of potential application value.

Biological Activities

Sea cucumber polysaccharides are a type of bioactive compound extracted from sea cucumbers, which are marine invertebrates found in oceans all over the world. These polysaccharides have been shown to possess a wide range of biological activities, including immunomodulation, anti-tumor, anticoagulation and antioxidant properties.

  • Immunomodulation. One of the key biological activities of sea cucumber polysaccharides is their immunomodulatory effects. Studies have shown that sea cucumber polysaccharides can stimulate the immune system and enhance the production of immune cells, such as macrophages and lymphocytes, which play a crucial role in fighting off infections and diseases. These immunomodulatory properties make sea cucumber polysaccharides promising for developing immunostimulant medications.
  • Anti-tumor. Sea cucumber polysaccharides have been investigated for their potential anti-tumor effects. Studies have demonstrated that sea cucumber polysaccharides can inhibit the growth of cancer cells and induce apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in tumor cells.
  • Anticoagulation. Sea cucumber polysaccharides also exhibit anticoagulant properties. They have an agglutinating effect on platelets, but do not cause platelet activation and metabolism, nor do they undergo morphological changes. This agglutination prevents platelets from exerting their due physiological activity and function, thereby achieving the purpose of anticoagulation and antithrombosis.
  • Antioxidant. Furthermore, sea cucumber polysaccharides possess strong antioxidant properties, meaning they can scavenge free radicals and prevent oxidative damage to cells and tissues. This can help to reduce inflammation, protect against age-related diseases, and promote overall health and wellbeing.

Applications

Sea cucumber polysaccharides have numerous potential applications in various industries, including:

  • Pharmaceutical industry. Sea cucumber polysaccharides have been found to possess various bioactive properties, such as immunomodulatory, anti-tumor, anticoagulant and antioxidant effects. As a result, they have great potential for the development of new medicines and pharmaceutical products.
  • Food industry. Sea cucumber polysaccharides can be used as food additives and supplements due to their nutritional value and health benefits. They can be used in functional foods, dietary supplements, and nutraceuticals to improve health and well-being.
  • Cosmetics industry. Sea cucumber polysaccharides have moisturizing and anti-aging properties, making them a valuable ingredient in skincare and cosmetic products. They can be used in creams, lotions, serums, and masks to enhance skin health and appearance.
