Description

Tetrodotoxin is a highly potent neurotoxin encountered in various marine organisms, including pufferfish, certain marine snails, and some octopus species. This toxin exerts its effects by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, which inhibits the propagation of action potentials in nerve cells. Tetrodotoxin is extremely toxic and can lead to paralysis or even death if ingested in sufficient quantities. Despite its high lethality, tetrodotoxin has attracted considerable interest in scientific research due to its unique mechanism of action, which has implications for pain management and neurological studies. Researchers frequently utilize tetrodotoxin as a valuable tool for investigating the mechanisms underlying nerve function, as well as the activity of skeletal and cardiac muscle cells.
