Description
µ-Conotoxin GIIIB is a conopeptide composed of 22 amino acids and three disulfide bonds, originally isolated from the venom of the piscivorous marine snail Conus geographus. The peptide adopts a compact structure and is rich in lysine and arginine residues, which form potential sites for interaction with sodium channels. An unusual feature is the presence of three hydroxyproline residues. This toxin serves as an effective probe for differentiating between neuronal and muscle sodium channels, with a preference for muscle channels at least 1000-fold greater than for neural channels. µ-Conotoxin GIIIB physically blocks the channel pore by binding to site I of the sodium channel, selectively blocking the voltage-gated sodium channel isoform of NaV1.4, which is primarily expressed in muscle cells. Currently, µ-conotoxin GIIIB has been used as a molecular tool for various biochemical applications. It is also widely used in other chemical and immunological applications.
