Alginate Oligosaccharide

Characteristic

Alginate Oligosaccharide

Alginate oligosaccharide (AOS) is a biological carbohydrate extracted from brown algae that is linked by α-L-mannuronic acid and β-Dguluronic acid via a 1,4-glycosidic bond, and is formed as a degradation product of alginate. A variety of methods have been used for the depolymerization of alginate polymers to produce AOS, including enzymatic degradation, acid hydrolysis, and oxidative degradation. AOS has been reported to possess a variety of unique biological activities including antitumor, antihypertensive, antioxidant, antibacterial, antidiabetic, anticoagulant and immunomodulatory among others. Due to these properties, AOS has been widely used in the agriculture, feed, medicine, food and skin care fields.

Applications

  • Agricultural industry
AOS is an endogenous plant-like oligosaccharide that acts as a biostimulator for plants, regulating their development and innate immunity. In addition, it induces antioxidant responses in plants and helps to improve cadmium tolerance and drought stress resistance.

Agricultural industry

  • Feed industry

Feed industry

AOS can be used as a novel feed supplement to improve aquaculture, poultry and swine production. For example, in weaned pigs, AOS supplementation effectively increases the digestibility of crude protein and fat, thus stimulating the growth of weaned pigs. In addition, AOS can enhance the immunity of animals by stimulating the activity of immune cells and promoting the secretion of immune factors.

  • Medical industry
AOS can exhibit various health benefits such as improved immunity, prevention of Alzheimer, anti-tumor, increased bone density and more. In addition, its low toxicity, non-immunogenicity and biodegradability make it an excellent material for the biomedical field.

Medical industry

  • Food industry

Food industry

The preservation and storage of seafood and aquaculture products is a key issue for the food industry. AOS can be used as a cryoprotector for frozen foods. For example, AOS exhibited cryoprotective effects during the frozen storage of peeled Pacific white shrimp through water replacement around myosin surface and subsequently hydrogen bonding with amino acid polar residues [1].

  • Skin care industry
Due to its water maintenance, gelling and viscosifying characteristics, AOS helps to lock the skin moisture, keep the skin smooth and make the skin more elastic. It is also excellent at eliminating superoxide anions (O2-), hydroxyl radicals (OH-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and other free radicals, thus delaying skin aging.
