Characteristic
Calcium alginate is classified as a fibrous dextranomer with a high swelling capacity. It is almost odorless and tasteless. Insoluble in water and ether, slightly soluble in ethanol, and slowly soluble in sodium polyphosphate, sodium carbonate and solutions bound to calcium ions. Calcium alginate has good biodegradability and biocompatibility, and can be widely used in various fields such as food, pharmaceutical and industrial welding.

Applications
- Pharmaceutical industry
- Calcium alginate can be woven into pliable patches or ribbons for filling cavities or tunneling wounds.
- Calcium alginate dressings have haemostatic properties and can be used to promote haemostasis during various surgical procedures.
- Calcium alginate dressing improves wound healing by promoting a moist wound healing environment, facilitating debridement and helping to prevent trauma to the wound bed and surrounding skin[1].
- Calcium alginate can absorb up to 19 to 30 times its weight in wound fluid.
- Food industry
Calcium alginate can be used as a thickening agent, gelling agent, emulsifier, stabilizer and texture improver to improve the quality of food products. - Industrial welding industry
Calcium alginate can be used as a binder and plasticizer for welding rods.
