Prostaglandins

Inquiry

Prostaglandins (PG) are a group of 20-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acids found in animals and humans. Since the first discovery of prostaglandins in marine organisms in 1969, scientists have isolated compounds with prostaglandin-like activity from a variety of marine organisms. Prostaglandins have multiple physiological activities, are closely related to the body's growth, development, reproduction, etc., and also have important clinical significance.

Types

There are different types of prostaglandins, each with specific roles and effects in the body. The most common types are as follows:

  • Prostaglandin E series (PGE). These prostaglandins are known for their role in promoting inflammation and pain. In addition, local injection of PGE1 can treat impotence. PGE2 has protective effects on the gastrointestinal mucosa and can help regulate blood pressure. PGE3 is important for cardiovascular health and may help reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • Prostaglandin F series (PGF). These prostaglandins are involved in the contraction of smooth muscle, such as the muscles of the uterus during labor. They also play a role in regulating blood pressure and intraocular pressure. Among them, PGF has been used for contraception, inducing labor, and terminating pregnancy.
  • Prostaglandin D series (PGD). These prostaglandins are involved in the regulation of sleep, inflammation, and allergic reactions. It also plays a role in vasodilation and bronchoconstriction.
  • Prostaglandin I series (PGI). These prostaglandins have anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, PGI2, also known as prostacyclin, is a potent vasodilator and inhibitor of platelet aggregation. It helps prevent blood clots from forming and plays a role in regulating blood pressure.

Medical Applications

  • Induction of labor
  • Treatment of erectile dysfunction
  • Treatment of pulmonary hypertension
  • Management of glaucoma
  • Treatment of gastric ulcers
