Characteristic

Ordinary spirulina is a tiny blue-green algae found in the form of single-celled organisms that convert sunlight into life energy. Blue spirulina is a relatively smaller concept. It is a concentrated extract of a blue-colored pigment called phycocyanin, uniquely found in blue-green algae.

Blue Spirulina Powder

Blue spirulina is made directly from ordinary spirulina. Firstly, the ordinary spirulina is thoroughly crushed and its cell walls ruptured. Then, compounds are added at a specific temperature, which effectively separates the phycocyanin pigments from the cellular components. Finally, the extracted phycocyanin (i.e. blue spirulina) is sent for drying and packaging. Blue spirulina is widely used as a nutritional supplement or health care food because of its high levels of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. In addition to the health benefits, blue spirulina has shown application potential in other fields. For example, in the food field, it can be used as a colorant for natural foods; in the cosmetic field, it can promote a healthy skin appearance; and in the scientific field, it can be used as a fluorescent reagent or fluorescent probe in various laboratory procedures.

The difference between blue spirulina and ordinary spirulina

Both blue spirulina and ordinary spirulina contain phycocyanin, which may be their only similarity. However, the differences between them are not insignificant. The three most common differences are described below.

The difference between blue spirulina and ordinary spirulina

Color: Blue spirulina contains a bright blue pigment called phycocyanin, which gives it a blue appearance. Ordinary spirulina has the same blue pigment. However, this pigment is masked by chlorophyll in ordinary spirulina, hence the greenish color.
Nutrition: Blue Spirulina is a blue extract or isolate of ordinary spirulina, which is rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Whereas ordinary spirulina is in a more whole form and therefore it contains more nutrients such as vitamins, proteins, antioxidants, minerals and other essential nutrients.
Taste: As an extract, blue spirulina has a very mild taste. However, as a whole-cell algae, ordinary spirulina has a very strong taste.

Health Benefits

Not only does blue spirulina turn food a cool blue color, but it also has a plethora of admirable health benefits. Its health benefits include, but are not limited to the following.
