Characteristic

Ammonium Alginate

Ammonium alginate is the ammonium salt of alginic acid. It is a natural, indigestible polysaccharide found in different marine algae such as brown marine algae (kelp and wracks). As a hydrophilic colloid, the substance can dissolve in water to form a viscous solution. In addition, it enables two incompatible phases (e.g. oil and water) to miscible with each other to form a homogeneous dispersion or emulsifier. As the use of ammonium alginate becomes more widespread, the market demand for it in various industries is also increasing.

Applications

  • Food industry
    • Ammonium alginate is used as thickening and gelling agents in food industry and commonly found in pie filling and gravy.
    • In combination with calcium ions, the gel formed by ammonium alginate is very stable for both cooking and freezing. Therefore, it helps prevent food from drying and ensures that the food is stable during freezing and thawing.
    • Ammonium alginate is used to produce the package material for food industry.
  • Pharmaceutical industry
    • Ammonium alginate is widely used in pharmaceutical preparations as a color diluent, emulsifier, film-forming agent and humectant.
    • Ammonium alginate can be used in antipyretic and analgesic products. It has a rapid antipyretic and analgesic effect and is therefore mainly used for cold headache, toothache, muscle pain, joint pain and rheumatic joint pain.
  • Others

Ammonium alginate is used in the manufacture of textiles and paper thanks to its rapid water absorption technology. Furthermore, the ammonium alginate is used in manufacturing of welding rods.
