Characteristic
Odontella aurita is a marine diatom and the type species of genus Odontella. The high biomass production and characteristic biochemical profile make Odontella aurita a promising microalgae for the production of bioactive ingredients. At different nitrogen concentrations and light intensities, Odontella aurita can accumulate eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5, n-3), fucoxanthin, and chrysolaminarin. Odontella aurita has been shown to have beneficial effects on human health and has been approved for human consumption. Similarly, it has also shown great application potential in the animal feed and cosmetics industries.
Nutritional components
Odontella aurita powder mainly contains high levels of EPA and some bioactive compounds, such as fucoxanthin and chrysolaminarin. The details are described below.
EPA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is also known as icosapentaenoic acid and timnodonic acid. In terms of chemical structure, it is a chain of 20 carbon atoms with 5 double bonds. The first double bond is located at the third carbon from the omega end. Odontella aurita powder can produce EPA up to about 28% of its total lipids. Due to its high EPA content, Odontella aurita powder has been industrially cultured and used in human food and dietary supplements. EPA-rich Odontella aurita powder helps maintain good heart health. It not only prevents the blood from clotting easily, but also lowers triglyceride levels in the blood. In addition, it can also reduce the formation of fat cells, thereby preventing skin aging.
Fucoxanthin is a natural product of carotenoids with the molecular formula C42H58O6. It is a potential source of drugs obtained from marine algae. Odontella aurita powder has a strong capacity for fucoxanthin accumulation. Fucoxanthin contained in Odontella aurita powder has been reported to have potential protective effects on various inflammation-related diseases. Furthermore, the presence of fucoxanthin also reduces body weight, improves blood lipid levels, and reduces insulin resistance in animal models of obesity.
Chrysolaminarin is a major polysaccharide reservoir in some marine algae and has attracted attention due to its broad range of health properties. Odontella aurita powder is rich in chrysolaminarin, which is a β-1,3-glucan with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to boost immunity and regulate lipid metabolism. In addition, for aquatic animals such as fish, feed supplementation with chrysolaminarin can improve growth, anti-inflammatory response, antioxidant capacity, immunity and disease resistance. Therefore, as a natural source of chrysolaminarin, Odontella aurita powder has the potential to be used as an immunostimulant in aquaculture feeds [1].
